I started running because of another friend of mine. Her name is Shana. She is a fantastic human being. The bravest person I know. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at age 36. She has 2 young children just like me. She went through a double mastectomy. She never complained. She never said "why me?". She was so strong and optimistic. The best attitude ever. A true warrior. I did not know how to help her. I was MAD as hell. I said why her many times. A good person like her should not have to fight the big C. Since I am a horrible cook it would not have been the best thing to bring food over - trust me -. So I decided to run the SUSAN G KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE in her honor. I had no clue what I was doing as far as training. I did not care. I raised $860 and I ran my first 5k on March 14, 2010. She was there with me, with no hair and no more boobs but smiling and alive.
Next month I am going back to Dodger Stadium to run this race again. I know I will run it faster then last year but this one is not about time and PR and all that running stuff. I am doing it in honor of Shana, who is on my team and will run/walk the 5k, and also in honor of Bill's stepmother Laura who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. I hate the big C. Today was XT, went to the gym and did 30 minutes on eliptical...so boring...and worked on my 6 packs...I mean my 2 packs and on my tooth picks aka my arms.

What? No lavendar scented candles giveawy? No thanks. The story of Lola is heart braking. Words cannot describe.
BTW, yes, I did consume some EFS LS before the race.
Cancer is truly indiscriminate. I have lost a few very beloved family members to it (including my dad) and have watched numerous other family members and friends wage the battle. My heart truly goes out to Lola and her family. It is wonderful that you use your running to fight this fight with all who are battling this disease. Go, Caroline :)
That breaks my heart about the little girl!! Shana sounds amazing...what a strong woman and amazing inspiration!
Just lost my Grandmother to Cancer this summer and my Dad's mom to leukemia 15 years ago.
Very sad and unfair for your friends daughter.

This is getting so scary. It seems these days that it's not a matter of IF a person will be diagnosed with cancer, but WHEN.
This post gave me goose bumps... I ran the Susan G Komen 5k in Washington DC and it was amazing! It's a great charity and I was glad to contribute,even though it was just a little.
Sorry to hear, and it tears me up when I hear of someone with their entire life ahead of them to be faced with such challenges. Keeping her in our prayers.
