The Google Apocalypse

So Google is making changes to blogger.  No more Google Friends connect.  So now what.
I saw some of you have added other ways to let people follow your blog: email, RSS feed and Linky are some I have seen.  Some have even make the jump to World Press.   This whole thing is just a pain.  I am not a lazy person but for this I kind of am.   I do want to make sure that I will keep following your blogs.   Are we loosing all our followers with this change?  Do we have to RE-follow everyone using a different way?  If you are all on my Google Reader list, I am good right?

I added the email and RSS follow me sections to my sidebar.
If you have any advices with this please share!

I have a race this weekend: A 5K.
My last one was the Turkey Trot and now I have 2 lined up for March.  I used to be scared of running a half marathon now it is how I feel about a 5K!  I am no sprinter.  I have a tendency to puke at the end of a race, I even have picture of this now..., and that usually comes with sprinting.  Fun times ahead!!!  I am optimistic about beating my Turkey Trot time though.  My chances for PR are better this weekend than at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure where  there's a lot of walkers.

The kids are also running Saturday, this will be fun.  We are a little overbooked that day:
  • Race for me at 8 am
  • Race for the kids at 9 am
  • Will's Basketball game at 10 am
  • Jonathan's Soccer game at noon
  • Will soccer game : don't know the time yet

Are you one of those?

A couple people mentioned to me that I met the criteria for this

1. 2 Half Marathons within a 16 day time frame.
2. 3 Half Marathons within a 90 day time frame.

I do see people with  these shirts at all the races.  I went on their website just to see what it was all about.  I am not sure I get it.  I mean I get the part of having crazy goals and reaching them.  That is clear.  The part that is not clear is what do you get for the $ you pay to join this group?

Membership cost - $35.00
Membership with shirt $65.00
Yearly dues - $10.00

So last night we had a winter here in Southern California...lasted about 7 seconds but it was as close to a real winter as we can get here.

I miss winter.  WHITE winter.

Did you have SNOW!? Crazy.

I am a half fanatic. I'm not sure what the benefit to it is, yet, but I haven't really explored it. I do want the shirt - I met a couple HF's at a race once, and it was pretty cool - it was like an instant bond :D.

Good luck with the 5K!

Wait, I forgot. Also, I have no idea what this google change is, what it means, or what I need to do. I'm ignoring it. Not sure that's the best plan, but.... oh well?

I've qualified for HF too (and will again next month). I asked about benefits, but there are none! lol It's all about the bragging rights.

I've been a HF for about a year. Naturally there are some bragging rights, but also a place to organize your races that you've completed, so who is doing the same future ones as you, as well as generally before races they do a big meet and greet photo op. I've met a lot of people through doing that, and its always nice to see a familiar face at a race :)

How annoying about the Google Friend connect, they didn't even ask us or anything.

I want to be a Half Fanatic but I don't know that I would want to pay for it?

I'm not sure this effects bloggers who use blogpost. just the wordpress users who have google connect on their sidebar? hmm not sure. Guess I'll find out when everyone else does!!

I just realized I qualified for half fanatic after doing my first and second halfs a week apart but damnit the second one is under my friends name. grrr.

I really have no idea how this google thing is going to pan out and twitter is starting to scare me already...I have a couple of 'odd' followers already. Is there a way to restrict your account? Does anyone know? I am hoping that as long as you are in my google reader I will still have you & all the other blogs I love!

Good luck in the 5k! That distance always scares me too! All those fast people...Yikes!!!! Maybe that's why I am embracing the ultra....it's made for slow pokes like me ;-D

The GFC is going away for WP blogs on March 1 but it's supposed to disappear shortly thereafter for everyone. That said I've had a WP blog for longer than I care to admit but have been procrastinating the change.
All the best w/your 5k. No worries about throwing up. All the coolest kids do it. : )

I follow all the blogs I love through Google reader, so I'm hoping they don't take away any that I signed up for using Connect.:(

So true about the half maniacs/fanatics. I felt the same way about my kids joining the Bible club at school. Love the Bible, but why should we pay you $25 to read it with us. No thanks, we can do that on our own. But it's slightly not socially acceptable to not be in the Bible club in Alabama. Hopefully my elementary school kids recover from this.:)

I'm clinging to the GFC thing until it blows up in my face! Congrats on achieving half fanatics status...whether or not you pay money and join, I still think you are pretty badass!

I use an RSS feed to get all the blogs I follow, I don't actually use the Google Friends thing at all. So cause mine is part of my email program (Mail on mac), I have a list of everyone's blogs and it just shows me which ones have new posts. I don't even usually click on the post (because I can read it all in my mail viewer) unless I want to comment.

So, I would suggest a RSS feed app or whatever. If you don't have a mac for using Mail, then Google RSS feed reader and you'll find heaps and they are free. Then you simply "add an RSS feed" and paste in the blog's URL and you get their last 25 posts or so and then get notified every time someone posts something new. To go to the actual blog, you click on the "read more" at the bottom, which takes you to the page.

Hope that helps!!

forgot to add that it might mean you have fewer posts read (like it wouldn't show you that I read your post in my reader, unless I click on 'read more') but there are more comprehensive blog stats that can show you how many people subscribe via RSS.

I am also in the "head in the sand" camp about the changes.

Good luck with the 5k! I never know how to pace myself at that distance either.

Half Fanatics was a big goal of mine, mainly to prove something to myself. But the blue shirt looks nice on me.

Never seen pictures like that, that's for sure. We got some rain Monday, but what we really got was wind.

I switched to wordpress last year to control my own destiny. My guess is RSS/Blog Readers is how you get most of your traffic. For me, I honestly just remember to come check you out when I can.

I haven't heard that GFC will go away from Blogger, but I know that they are trying to get people to use Google+ instead - there will probably be a widget to have people add you to their circles is my guess.

I am usually so pro-active but with this one, I am dragging my feet. I really don't want to deal with it all and darnit, tomorrow is March 1st. I just imagined I was going to be fine until the Blogger date in the future....not tomorrow.

c'mon!!

That is really annoying about google friend connect if that is true! How will I follow all the blogs that I like to keep track of? Google reader makes it so easy to keep track of blogs out there! All these internet sites (google, facebook, etc) just seem to make these drastic changes that no one seems to like.

Cool that you fit the membership requirements for marathon maniacs! You seem to do races all the time, so it doesn't surprise me that you fit the profile.

I understand what you're saying about fearing the 5K now. I have one in May and haven't run one since Dec. 2010. I'm a little worried about the throwing up factor here too! Oh well--you don't know until you try, right? I hope your weekend is fun. It's packed.

I don't know what the Google change means. I'm being lazy about it. Sigh.

I thought GFC was going away for non-google-based blogs and blogger is owned by google so I assumed it'd stay for us on blogger? I got the vibe they're trying to push google+ use, which is lame. I refuse to join that too! Like I need one more place to "friend" all my FB / blog / whatever friends!!

As for my subscriptions, I usually Subscribe on my own by adding the RSS feed to my google reader.

A great saturday of sport and I hope with your PB on the 5km.
At last here it's spring .... but I feel bad with allergies.

Sorry I'm so behind blog reading and hope to catch up over the weekend. I hope you had a fantastic5k race with a PR!

I usually follow blogs from blogger with the follow button. Blogs from wordpress I use the add function in blogger. Once I follow them I read all blogs in the google reader. I like reading it there, since I always see who has a new post and as soon as I read it, its off my reading list.
