Runner knee.......?

So I discovered that I am pretty good at that thing called denial.
I mean like an A+ good.
A couple weeks ago I felt like a pinch on my left knee during my long run.
I know I felt it. It was sharp.
It kind of went away after a few walking steps and I finished my run and all the ones I did since.
I thought...well maybe it was in my head... Yeah right....I knew I felt it...but let's pretend I did not because I am very "mature" like that.

I wanted to do my 8 miler Saturday but the schedule was full with soccer and baseball games starting at 8:30 am and birthday party for the kids so that came before my running. I always say I am a mom first and it is true :) I did not run Saturday and I thought I would be well rested for my long run.

Easter Sunday, I got up early to get my 8 miles done and have the rest of the day with the family. I was fine...until mile 4.
That is when I felt that pinch again.
I could not ignore it...I had to skip a little instead of running....and stop and walk....I did not want to call Bill because he was at the park with the boys practicing hitting the ball. I was able to run slow back home. I felt the pain a couple of time. I was worried to feel it with each step.

The pain is at the front of the knee, below the knee cap.
I don't feel it all the time.
It is random and so far just on 2 runs.
See denial.
It is not swollen.

So anyone has had runner knee? Is that it?
How did you heal it?

I read a little online.
I found that ice-rest and elevate is the way to go. I also read that this can be caused by weakness of hip muscles kind of the same as plantar fasciitis and my groin injury. It is the knee on the same side as my groin injury.
I also read that it is recommended to try to run on softer surfaces like the treadmill and to not stop running. So today I did 4 miles very slow. I felt the pinch once. It was not as sharp but it was there.

I want to go see a sports doctor not my GP because I know she will not help me and I will just waste the copay.

I will go back to doing my PT exercises that I had stop doing. Very stupid I know.

I hope this is nothing serious.
If you had that and you have advices for me please share! And thank you in advance! :)

I am writing this on the blogger app so pictures at the end of the post. I wanted to show you what my son is willing to do to impress the girl he likes....
And give his dear mom some material for his 21st bday!!!
He was invited to her birthday and all the games were for girls and he was such a good sport.
You can see for yourself...(she IS a doll..I cannot blame him!)
4 in heels race and put the lipstick on! He won the just dance wii contest!
And he got a cool dragon tattoo!

Wow, that is love! My little girl is always getting invited to boy parties, but she likes them better anyway.

Good luck with the knee--I haven't had that one (yet). I hope it's not serious or long lasting!

Okay, I am not a medical professional....buuuut it kind of sounds like you might have tendinitis in your knee. Your symptoms sound similar to what I experienced when I had it a couple of years ago. Mostly ice and rest helped it. You can also buy the band to wear below your knee cap for around $10.

Your son is the absolute cutest too!!!!!

Me too. I wore a brace below the knee for awhile. It stopped hurting when I stopped running. Now I occasionally feel twinges of it :(

When I briefly had runner's knee I rested and iced; when I returned to running I wore a strap for a few weeks and changed to a more neutral shoe. The stability shoes I wore were too restrictive and prevented normal patellar tracking.

runners are so stubborn :)

Ok from my experience I agree it sounds like runner's knee. Have you started more speed work, more hills or a lot more mileage lately?

The only real help is going to be the PT exercises. However the good news is you really should stay active!! It helps to keep it from getting stiff so anytime it hurts stop immediately, but otherwise you should be good with walks and easy runs that aren't super long.

It sounds like you know what you need to do to get it back on track. No more of that ignoring the pain! Bad stubborn runner! :)

Runners are great at running through discomfort so we are tempted to run through pain.

I agree with all the advice you have received but have to ask - any new shoes? Are your shoes old?

And when my hips start getting out of alignment I tend to feel things in my knees too. Take care and keep up with your PT exercises...and now I will go home and listen to my own advice and stretch daily.

Hmmmm, you should take a photo and point to exactly where it hurts on your knee. Maybe someone else has it and know exactly what it is?? I agree with you on the copay. I wasted a lot of money getting my IT Band figured out. That is also a pinch feeling as well but it's more to the side of the kneecap.

haha... LOVE all the pics!! Looks like everyone had a fun time!! Hope you're doing well and that your knee heals up quickly! I've been dealing with the same nagging knee pain now for about 8 months and am fed up, but i'm poor so I can't go to a specialist yet... I'm saving up! ;) I'm actually just hoping that strengthening and balancing out the muscles in my legs will resolve the issue... we shall see...

I have had some knee issues in the past and the best thing is resting and icing. You can also try running with some type of support on your knee. I have also used KT Tape. Maybe I can bring you some to try to see if it helps you. There is a way to tape up your knee for full support.

I recently had some issues with tendons in my knee and the doctor put me on an ibuprofen + rest regimen. I took about 400mg of ibuprofen three times a day and cut back my mileage from 30 per week to 10ish. I was totally fine in 7 days. I don't know if this would work for you, but if it's a tendon problem like I had (and "Runner's Knee" is a tendon problem), then you could try ibuprofen. good luck!

Oh, and I also got rid of my shoes! I had changed shoes just a few weeks prior to the problem emerging, and when I threw them away (at the doctor's prompting), I started getting better. So... yeah, someone else mentioned shoes.. that's something to think about.

That sounds just like runners knee. You may need to take some time off and work on some PT strengthening exercises for your glutes and hips. Also, is it time to replace your shoes? I would try to stay away from braces and work on strengthening. May want to go to a sports doc if it doesn't get better soon

The sport doctor is the best solution because the knee is a very complicate part of our (running) body.
Great pics!

Of course you should go back to doing PT exercises. These can really help you to recover properly and increase strength of your knee.back and neck pain bergen county , low back pain bergen county
