New and Good Stuff

New: I ran without my Ipod today.  For the first time. EVER.   I did not plan it really..I just forgot to bring it.  I did want to start doing some of my runs without music to prepare for Hood to Coast where I am not sure it is allowed to run with music.  Even if it is allowed I want to run without music there.  OK so 4 miles with no Keith or Bruce singing in my ears.  Well...it wasn't that bad.  I can actually do this.  One thing I cannot do though is relax and shut my brain off.   I kept making lists in my head of what I need to do.  So that was good.  Also I am feeling a little better finally.  I'd say I am at 70% so also good.

Today at my kids school we had a get together to thank all the parents who volunteered in the classrooms during the year.  It was really nice and I received a fantastic gift from Will's class (2nd grade).  They made journals with thank you letters to the parents who helped.   I got 10 letters in mine.   They were all really sweet and some had parts that made me laugh.

"You made perfect, nice, sweet children" !!!
Ha Ha Ha! That made me laugh.  This is so cute!

"You are in the very best shape for a person like you" :)
The very polite and sweet 7 yrs old way of saying "old"!

This one is from a special boy who is autistic.
He always gives me a big hug in the morning and he says he is my fan!

That one made my day.

Those leters were so sweet and funny! I laugh so hard at what kids say sometimes and how they sneakily call us old-as-the-hills. :-) Very cute!
It really is different running without tunes isn't it? I do it from time to time and kind of enjoy it (on occasion!)

Running without music isn't bad, I'm about half and half these days but used to always have it!

My office wall is plastered with stuff from the boys...now that they are 13 and 16, I treasure them even more because they were so innocent.

Great stuff from those kids. I volunteer a lot for my girls' classes and it always means so much to have them say hi and greet me. Those letters are treasures!

As far as running without music, I used to be a slave to the music but when I joined my running club, I found the joys of running with a group and getting to talk to people to engage your mind that way. It was different and in some ways preferred. I still run with music but I do enjoy the company of others, and I can run solo without music too. Not always ideal but it works. I ran the first 11 miles of my marathon Sunday without tunes! Glad I made it that long :)

How sweet! Kids are so sweet and hilarious at the same time. I almost never run with music since I have heard that it can be dangerous when you are on the streets.

Love the letters. Each one better than the one before. Kids say the best things. They're so right about all of it. You are awesome!

Oh, those letters were so sweet and funny! "The best shape for a person like you" -- lol.

I used to always listen to music, now it's only sometimes. Mostly because half the time I can't find my headphones.

The letters are so sweet! Just made me go awe.

I started running with no music last fall when I started running in the dark and 5:30am -- just seemed safer. I've run two or three halfs without music -- and sometimes I really like the quiet. But sometimes I like the distraction -- but probably good to be able to run either way.

There are some very smart kid in that class! :^)

I'm glad the music-free running went well. I weaned myself off of it last year--now I save it for when I need a special extra spring in my step (like the last few miles of a long race or during hard sections of a boring long run).

Love the letters! Aren't little kids the sweetest? I always run without music. I run outdoors, and want to be able to hear what's going on around me at all times. I'm able to keep myself entertained, so don't miss the tunes.

Awe, so sweet. I love how kids that age express themselves.

Those notes are simply the best! Keepers, for sure.

Wow--your first run w/o an iPod? Can I tell you that other than on the treadmill (which I avoid) I have never used an iPod for a run? So interesting how different one runner is from the next!
